What are the electrical requirements for installing a garbage disposal?

15 Amp (minimum) dedicated breaker

The disposer must be properly grounded. Power Cord must be inserted into a 3-hole grounded receptacle. Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if you are in doubt as to whether the disposer is properly grounded.

InSinkErator EZ connect corded disposers must utilize the EZ connect power cord provided with disposer. Do not re-use pre-existing power cord. If the EZ connect power cord does not fit the outlet, do not modify the plug or attempt to force the plug into the outlet – have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

All wiring must comply with local electrical codes.

What safety precautions should be taken during the installation process of a garbage disposal?

Before attempting disposer installation or replacement, the electrical power must be shut off at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

Are there any maintenance tasks or precautions to be aware of after installing a garbage disposal?

Do not put the following into a disposer: clam or oyster shells, caustic drain cleaners or similar products, glass, china, or plastic, metal (such as bottle caps, steel shot, tin cans, or utensils), hot grease or other hot liquids.

When not operating a disposer, leave the stopper in place to reduce the risk of objects falling into the disposer.

Disposers are designed to dispose of normal household food waste; inserting materials other than food waste into disposer could cause personal injury and/or property damage.

Do not dispose of the following in the disposer: paints, solvents, household cleaners and chemicals, automotive fluids, plastic wrap.

Do not store flammable items such as rags, paper or aerosol cans near disposer.

Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in vicinity of disposer.

Periodic cleaning of removable baffle by either washing by hand or placing in the dishwasher will help prevent odors.

Periodic grinding of ice combined with citrus peels will help prevent odors.

Periodically inspect plumbing connections to ensure leak-free operation.

What are some common troubleshooting tips if a garbage disposal is not functioning properly after installation?

If disposer is connected to a dishwasher, check to ensure the dishwasher inlet plug has been removed from the disposer.

Check mounting assembly to ensure all three tabs are engaged properly

If disposer does not run:

• Check electrical connections on disposer.
• Check service panel for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses. connections and circuit breaker.
• Check if overload has been tripped. If disposer is equipped with an automatic overload switch, allow the disposer to cool for a period of up to 20 minutes before turning back on. If disposer is equipped with a manual overload switch, allow disposer motor to cool for 3 – 5 minutes, then lightly push red reset button on disposer bottom.

Check to see if disposer is jammed. If jammed:

1. Turn the power switch to the off position before attempting to clear a jam or removing an object from the disposer.
2. Turn off water.
3. Insert one end of wrenchette (provided with disposer) into center hole on bottom of disposer. Work wrenchette back and forth until it turns one full revolution. Remove wrenchette.
4. Reach into disposer with long-handled tongs or pliers to remove object(s).

Can a garbage disposal be installed in any type of kitchen sink?

InSinkErator^® food waste disposers can be installed on virtually any sink with a standard sized sink opening.

InSinkErator^® disposers can be installed on thicker sinks by utilizing extended mounting flange screws provided with disposer.

For extra thick sinks, an available extended sink flange accessory (with extended screws) is available.
